Since 1887

Where modern Lagos was argued into being.

Prominent Lagosians raised the funds for the Hall in 1885, and it opened two years later as the centre of the city's social and political life.

In 1903 it hosted the first public screening of a film in Nigeria, at the invitation of Herbert Macaulay. It was the venue for the launch of the National Council for Nigeria and the Cameroons and of the Lagos branch of the Action Group. Community meetings, elections and arbitration cases were held here. Kola Ogunmola, Oyin Adejobi and Hubert Ogunde premiered productions on its stage.

After decades of decline the building was restored by the Lagos State Government, and in January 2022 its management passed to Lufodo Group following a competitive bid — returning the Hall to the people who make work for its stage.
